Sun Salutations with a Yoruba Twist
Wellness culture sells us complicated routines, but my most profound spiritual reset is an ancient practice that costs nothing: greeting the sunrise. In our cosmology, the rising sun is the physical manifestation of Olodumare’s (the Supreme Creator’s) daily renewal of the covenant with humanity. Before coffee, before news, before any external voice enters my head, I step outside, raise my open palms to the sky, and offer a deep, resonant libation of breath: “Mo ki O, Oorun. Mo ki O, Olorun.” (I greet you, Sun. I greet you, God.) This isn’t optimism; it is a theological alignment with the axis of creation itself, acknowledging that I have been granted another cycle of opportunity to fulfill my earthly destiny—my Ayamo.
